The power shown in the film Heartbeat is about the young girl having power and courage to stand up for not only herself, but for someone else who’s getting bullied by older kids. The creator is trying to give a message about bullying, and that everyone has enough power to stand up against bullies, and that when you do stand up to bullies it makes you feel good about yourself and you can be happy with what you have accomplished that day. The director used different camera angles. For example, they used a low angle when filming the bullies because it was the bullies that had the power, not the victim or other people. They used a high angle at the start of the film to show that the girl is unhappy and she may be one of the people getting bullied. This technique links to personal power because it really helps to show the viewer more about who’s in power and who isn’t. The lighting in the film also helps show us the emotions of someone. For example, at the start we can see the little girl laying down on the bed with her hands covering her eyes creating a dark shadow on her face. The shadow that was created is showing that she’s sad, and doesn’t have any personal power. The lighting links to personal power because it shows when someone’s in power or not. When she grabs the bully’s arm preventing him from punching the victim, we can see that now there is more light shining on her face than shadow. Therefore, another technique used in the film would be long shots, long shots showing us when people may be laughing at her or pointing at her. Longshots are used many times throughout the film, starting when the 2 adults walk behind her.it links to personal power because it shows us when other people are laughing, pointing or even throwing stuff at her, it tells us that she is getting her power taken away from her. When she walks through the hallway she gets laughed at and pointed at, when she sits down in class people throw stuff at her and when she’s outside we can see 2 girls whispering about her. Then when she stops the bully we can see all the people crowded around in disbelief that the girl they have been bullying has enough courage to stop the bully instead of standing around and watching. Overall, personal power is used in the film to show us more emotion and the whole mood of the scene instead of just having sound effects.
